Kochi, Dec 17: Movies with rich emotional quality alone can gift the viewer with the same degree of excitement even 50 years after watching them first, director-cinematographer Shaji N. Karun said at Kochi Design Week (KDW) today.

To sustain the experience value of a movie decades since its release is a big challenge, he noted at a 20-minute talk on ‘Cinema in Transition’ towards the conclusion of KDW-3 at Bolgatty Convention Centre.

Sense, sensibility and aesthetics have high place in cinema even when this art is “basically a child of science”, he noted at the keynote address in the two-day festival that provided first-hand knowledge about global models and trends in design as a fast-emerging field. “Imagination is based on one’s senses.”

The 70-year-old filmmaker, who is currently chairman of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation, subsequently gave away awards for various categories of a film festival held as part of December 16-17 KDW-3.

Karun’s talk was followed by a 45-minute panel discussion on Global opportunities ahead for Malayalam Film Industry’. Moderated by bureaucrat-writer Prashant Nair, the speakers were actor Vinay Forrt and filmmakers Tharun Moorthy and Suraj Varma.

KDW-3, which was held in partnership with national and international industry bodies such as World Design Organisation, World Design Council and Institute of Indian Interior Designers, spanned for a week with activities in KSUM’s Technology Innovation Zone in Kalamassery and at Bolgatty Convention Centre. The event was hosted with cooperation by KSUM, which is the nodal agency of the Kerala government for entrepreneurship development and incubation activities in the state.
