Kochi, Dec 17: The inevitable cradle from infant days can grow on to become a toy during childhood and then mature into a trolley-bag during adulthood, going by an innovative item showcased at the Kochi Design Week (KDW) in this city.

Swaying chair is the model on which the multi-purpose piece is on display at KDW-3 in Bolgatty Island. This can be used as a cradle in the first ten years, say students of the Kerala Institute of Design (KID) who have come up with the model. “The child, while growing up, can use this as a horse by mounting on it and virtually riding it,” said Amith Paul of the government-run KID in Kollam, 150 km south of here.

Further, as an adult, she or he can use the item as a suitcase, reveals Paul. “Even as a trolley bag, given its sturdiness that guarantees security,” he adds at the design fair of KDW-3 being hosted by Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) in its efforts to update people on the models and trends in the fast-emerging field.

KID students at KDW-3 also exhibited an array of games. For instance, a game of dice, titled ‘Pirates of Arabian Sea’, which progresses virtually along the ports of Kollam, Kochi and, further northward, Kozhikode and Kannur. “The protagonist comes in for trade, but ends up as a pirate,” informs Hemanth, a post-graduate student at KID.

As for Paul, the designer has also come up with a game on the lines of the popular Ludo. Featuring six teams of two thieves each striving to get into the locker of a bank, the game won major interest among the visitors at the KDW-3.

The design fair also displayed artifacts such as chairs made of glass-bottles, virtual-real interior design, forest resources and variety furniture.

The exhibits that grabbed attention at the fair include those of ManjuVasudev (Forest Post, which provides mainstream market to products by tribal population), Sana Passricha (Swab, which converts old cloth into usable fresh material), Hilonee K Shah (Papier Culture, which makes fresh paper from old newspapers), Maya Vivek (Holy Waste, which makes incense-sticks from faded flowers at temples), AnuCheeran (The Little Gold Fish, which makes artworks from clay) and RenjiniThampi (Vapasee, which produces curious objects from used glass-bottles).

KDW-3, with more than 25,000 delegates comprising design professionals, architects, interior designers, thought leaders, policymakers, government officials and general public, was held in partnership with national and international industry bodies such as World Design Organisation, World Design Council and Indian Institute of Interior Designers.

KSUM is the nodal agency of the Kerala government for entrepreneurship development and incubation activities in the state.
