Low-cost wind-power turbine invites attention at ‘Huddle Global’

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec. 15:With his low-cost equipment that produces electricity from small turbines propelled by winds, Arun George’s is a self-scripted success story with no reliance on known experts in the field of science and technology.
Avant Garde Innovations, which Arun and his brother Anoop George started in the Kerala capital in 2015, is gaining the attention of the delegates at the ongoing ‘Huddle Global’ for gaining international reputation even while remaining totally indigenous. With their projects having won the UN recognition twice, the company has even the US government among its clients.
“Our AVATAR wind turbines are today working across the globe except in Antarctica and Australia,” reveals Arun about Avant Garde Innovations, which has twice figured among the world’s top 20 cleantech startups. “In fact, more than 25 small wind-turbine companies are affiliated to the American government, yet the U.S authorities chose us for their use.”
The innovative tool and technology are on display at the December 15-16 ‘Huddle Global’ being organized at Kovalamby Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), bringing together startup founders, mentors, industry leaders and heads of government departments to openup vastpartnership opportunities to add to the state’s robust startup ecosystem.
The all-weather Avatar turbines can generate 3-5 kilowatt power every day, which would suffice the needs of an average family in Kerala. The Indian prize is Rs 80,000, where the item is sold abroad two-and-a-half times the amount. “It has survived cyclone in Gujarat, hot weatherin Rajasthan and extreme winter in Ladakh and hasn’t been damaged. The turbine can work for a good 25 years, by when the consumer would have benefited by three to five times more than what was spent to buy it,” revealsArun, an MBA graduate from Australia’s James Cook University.
Last year, Avant Garde Innovations set up a wind turbine for the Indian Army at Ladakh in upper Himalayas at an altitude of 11,000 feet above sea level amid a chill of -30 degree Celsius. “That made our wind-turbine the highest altitudewind turbine in India,” Arun pointed out. “We are now installing what is to become the world’s smallest turbine at the highest altitude of around 16000 ft from sea level. That is in Sikkim along the India-China border.”
The equipment doesn’t occupy much space, and is economical in its labour costs including maintenance. When a study by ANERT (Agency for Non-conventional Energy and Rural Technology) says wind turbines have the capacity to produce 2,000 MW power in Kerala, the state has not tapped even five per cent of the potential,” Arun points out. “Wind-turbines should be provided government subsidy, just as solar plants get it.”
Huddle Global, which concludes on Friday, was inaugurated by Chief Minister ShriPinarayiVijayan, at The LeelaRaviz, Kovalam, 25 km south of this city.
KSUM, the nodal agency of the Kerala Government for entrepreneurship development and incubation activities in the state, has been organising ‘Huddle Kerala’ since 2018.
