Genrobotics opens defence, space production facility in state capital
Trivandrum / August 20, 2026
Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 20: Kerala-based deep-tech robotics company Genrobotics has opened a new production facility in the state capital, marking a significant expansion of its manufacturing and research capabilities into defence production, aerospace and space technology.
The facility, located at KINFRA, Menamkulam, near Thumba, will focus on the development and production of robotics technologies for defence and space applications, marking the company’s expansion from its established standing in sanitation and medical robotics.
The facility was inaugurated by Shri APM Mohammed Hanish, Additional Chief Secretary (Industries), Government of Kerala. Shri Balagopal Chandrashekar, Chairman, Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC), and Shri Santhosh Koshy Thomas, Managing Director of KINFRA, addressed the gathering at the function.
Genrobotics investors Manoj Agarwal, Co-founder and Managing Partner of SeaFund, and Anil Joshi, Managing Partner of Unicorn India Ventures, attended the function.
Shri Vimal Govind, Genrobotics Co-founder and CEO; M.K, Rashid K, Director and Co-founder; Nikhil N.P., Director and COO; and Arun George, Director and CBO, were also present.
The Menamkulam unit is designed for research and development-led production, with a particular focus on robotics for defence and space applications. The company has strengthened its aerospace capabilities in recent months by bringing senior talent from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) into its team.
The new facility forms part of a larger expansion of Genrobotics' manufacturing infrastructure in Kerala. The company’s production facility at Palakkad, which is its largest, is nearing completion. It will focus on sanitation and medical technologies.
A new headquarters-cum-R&D facility is also being developed at Chanthavila in Thiruvananthapuram. Once operational, the three facilities are expected to add a combined 1 lakh square feet of infrastructure to Genrobotics' operations in Kerala.
The expansion strengthens the company's positioning of Kerala as its principal manufacturing and innovation base while broadening its technology portfolio across sanitation, industrial, medical, defence and aerospace robotics.
Shri Vimal Govind said the company's journey has evolved significantly since its early work in sanitation robotics.
"We began by going where no one else would: into the sewers. Today, we're headed where few dare to dream: into space. From sanitation to space, that's the journey Genrobotics has been on, and this is just the beginning," he said at the inaugural function.
The company's expansion into defence and space comes at a time when India is seeking to strengthen domestic capabilities in advanced manufacturing, robotics and aerospace technologies. The addition of dedicated R&D and production infrastructure could also create opportunities for Genrobotics to develop technology for specialised environments where remote operation and robotic intervention can reduce human risk.
With the three facilities planned across Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad, Genrobotics is positioning its next phase of growth around a larger manufacturing base in Kerala, while expanding the applications of robotics from hazardous sanitation environments to healthcare, industry, defence, and space.
Shri Tony Thomas, Co-founder of Zoho Corporation, said: “What Genrobotics, Vimal and the team are doing by leveraging technology to create products for the betterment of society needs to be appreciated.”
About Genrobotics
Genrobotics is an Indian deep-tech robotics company best known for developing the Bandicoot robot, the world's first robotic scavenger that eliminates the need for humans to enter manholes and sewers for cleaning. Since then, the company has expanded its portfolio to include robotics solutions for water and sanitation inspection, industrial cleaning, and defence applications, alongside a growing presence in medical and aerospace robotics. Genrobotics has been recognized with the Pride of Kerala award for its contribution to innovation and deep-tech entrepreneurship from the state, and continues to build its footprint across international markets including Singapore, Malaysia, and the Middle East and MENA region.
