Tropical Titans continue winning binge at 6th race of CBL-2 in Kottapuram

• Raging Rowers finish 2nd, upsetting Mighty Oars with a 12-microsecond lead

Thrissur, Oct 15: Tropical Titans continued their winning spree at the Champions Boat League (CBL-2) today by topping at the IPL-model tournament’s sole event in Thrissur district, easily pushing Raging Rowers and Mighty Oars to the second and third position respectively at the sixth race in Kottappuram, 35 km south of the city.

Rowing the famed snake-boat ‘Mahadevikad Kattil Thekkethil’, the reigning champions (traditionally Pallathuruthy Boat Club) covered the track in 3:23.14 minutes this evening, edging past Raging Rowers (Kerala Police Boat Club, Champakulam: 3:28.84) who turned out to be the runners-up. Missing the second rank with just 12 microseconds was Mighty Oars (NCDC, Nadubhagam: 3:28.96).

Today’s winners gave early hint at their immense form, as Tropical Titans finished the heats in mere 3:16.11 minutes.

Emerging fourth at Kottapuram were Ripple Breakers (Punnamada Boat Club, Veeyapuram), followed by Pride Chasers (Vembanad Boat Club, Payippad), who had staged a major upset a fortnight ago by becoming the runner-up at Kochi’s Marine Drive. Finishing sixth here was Coast Dominators (UBC Kainakary) despite changing their boat from Karichal to Cheruthana.

Backwater Knights (Village Boat Club, Devas) ended seventh at Kottapuram, followed by Thunder Oars (KBC-SFBC, Ayaparambu Pandi, who had finished third at last weekend’s races in Kochi’s Marine Drive). At the bottom stood Backwater Warriors (Town Boat Club, St Pious Tenth).

With the Kottapuram races ending, Tropical Titans stay atop with 58 points, followed by Mighty Oars (51 points). Sharing the third rankings are Raging Rowers and Ripple Breakers (Punnamada Boat Club, Veeyapuram) with 44 points each. Pride Chasers are the fifth rank with 37 points. Coast Dominators (UBC Kainakary, Cheruthana) stand at the sixth with 29 points. Thunder Oars (21) are placed at seventh, while Backwater Warriors and Backwater Knights share the last ranks (eighth) with 20 points each.

The next round CBL-2 is slated at Kainakary in Alappuzha district on October 22.

Tourism Minister Shri P. A. Mohamed Riyas inaugurated the races at Kottappuram through online. Present at the function were Shri Benny Behanan, MP, Shri V.R. Sunilkumar, MLA, and filmmaker Kamal besides members of civic bodies.

 

The final of IPL-model snake-boat tournament being held by Kerala Tourism in 12 venues is slated at the sprawling Ashtamudi Lake in downstate Kollam city on November 26.

Each participating team will get Rs 4 lakh in every league match. Besides, the winner will get an additional Rs 5 lakh, followed by Rs 3 lakh for the runner-up and Rs 1 lakh for the second runner-up.

The CBL-2 venues after next Saturday’s Kainakary are Thazhathangadi near Kottayam (October 29), Pandanad near Chengannur (November 5), Kayamkulam in Alappuzha district (November 12) and Kallada in Kollam district (November 19) before the finals in Kollam.

The inaugurals of the league in Alappuzha on September 4 saw Tropical Titans winning the race as part of the 68th edition of the famed Nehru Trophy Boat Race on the sprawling Punnamada Lake, out-rowing Mighty Oars in a photo-finish. The November 26 finals at Kollam will coincide with the famed President’s Trophy.
