Goethe-Zentrum to screen movie on Germany’s football origins in city on June 17

Thiruvananthapuram, June 13: With the FIFA World Cup kicking off soccer frenzy world over, German language and cultural institute, Goethe-Zentrum, in association with the Banner Film Society, will screen ‘Der Ganz Grosse Traum’ (Lessons of a Dream), a highly rated football-related film on Wednesday, June 17.

The 2011 movie is loosely based on the life of Konrad Koch, who formally introduced football in Germany, making the country to eventually emerge as a soccer powerhouse and World Cup winners.

The movie will be screened at the amphitheatre of Goethe-Zentrum in Jawahar Nagar, Kowdiar at 6.30 pm.

Directed by Sebastian Grobler and written by Philipp Roth, the movie, set in the 19th century, narrates how Koch, a high school English teacher in Germany, introduced his students to football in order to get them interested in English culture and language.

History of German football is incomplete without Konrad Koch’s pioneering efforts, as he and his colleague August Hermann, organized Germany's first documented football match in the city of Braunschweig.

Entry to the screening is free for public.
