Kochi, Oct 8: Demonstrating excellent professionalism along a particularly tough track, reigning champions Tropical Titans won the fifth race of Champions Boat League (CBL-2) even as second rankers Mighty Oars were pushed to the fifth position at the IPL-model boat-race at the Marine Drive in the city today.

Tropical Titans (Pallathuruthy Boat Club, rowing Mahadevikad Kattil Thekkethil) topped the finals with an eminent timing of 4:21.02 minutes. Pride Chasers (traditionally Vembanad Boat Club, Payippad) staged a major upset by finishing second (4:32.43 minutes), ahead of Thunder Oars (KBC-SFBC, Ayaparambu Pandi: 4:36.10), much to the thrill of the crowd.

Mighty Oars (NCDC, Nadubhagam), who were the winners at the Piravom races of CBL-2 last weekend (October 1), had to be contended with the fifth here this evening, as Raging Rowers (Kerala Police Boat Club, Champakulam) came fourth, heralding a fresh dynamics to the IPL-model snake-boat tournament being held in 12 venues. The final on November 26 will be at the sprawling Ashtamudi Lake in downstate Kollam city.

With the latest results, Tropical Titans continue to stay on top with 48 points. Today’s rude shock apart, Mighty Oars retain their second slot with 43 points, followed by Ripple Breakers (Punnamada Boat Club, Veeyapuram: 37 points) who were the second runners-up at CBL-2’s Pulinkunnu races in neighbouring Alappuzha district a fortnight ago.

Standing fourth are Raging Rowers (35 points), followed by Pride Chasers (Vembanad Boat Club, Payippad: 31 points) at fifth. Coming sixth are Coast Dominators (UBC Kainakary, Karichal: 24 points). Backwater Warriors (Town Boat Club, St Pious Tenth) and Thunder Oars share seventh rank with 18 points each, while Backwater Knights (Village Boat Club, Devas) are at the bottom with 16 points.

Irrigation Minister Shri Roshy Augustine inaugurated the Marine Drive races at the function presided by Kochi Mayor Shri M. Anilkumar. Present on the dais were legislators Shri T.J. Vinod and Shri K.J. Maxi besides actor Jayasurya. Actress Miya George distributed the prizes.

The next round CBL-2 is slated at Kottappuram near Kodungallur (Thrissur district) on October 15.

The finals at Kollam will overlap with the famed President’s Trophy.
