ABC Art Room: Wall mural project ‘Sounds of Neighbourhood’ transforms public spaces into interactive canvases

Kochi, Feb 14: A four-day wall mural project, titled “Sounds of Neighbourhood” was conducted at ABC Art Room, Water Metro, and on some street walls of Fort Kochi, bringing together participants to collaboratively transform public spaces into interactive canvases reflecting local stories and cultural expressions.
Visual artist Hariprasad R, who facilitated this community-based art initiative, highlighted that the response from the local community has been overwhelmingly positive.
“Since the children themselves are painting the walls, the residents have shown genuine interest in the project. In fact, many locals have voluntarily offered their walls for the artwork and even expressed their willingness to provide more space in the future because they are excited about the activity,” he said.
Noting a memorable aspect of the initiative, Hariprasad said it was remarkable to see students from places like Malappuram engaging closely with local residents.
“The children spent time speaking with the locals to understand their lives and even included elements from the interiors of nearby homes in their drawings. I had advised them to seek permission before sketching anyone, and they followed this thoughtfully. Even the teachers were pleasantly surprised by the confidence and initiative the students showed in connecting with the community,” he added.
Hariprasad also emphasized the significance of the project at the Biennale. “Beyond that, I feel this is a very important initiative at the Biennale. I am not saying there aren’t other works of art, but I see this as a different way to interact with the community,” he said.
