Biennale for its artistic excellence and scale
Kochi / January 28, 2026
Kochi, Jan 28: Dr Vijay Kumar, Commissioner and Secretary, Tourism Department, Government of Meghalaya, has commended the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB) for its scale, artistic excellence, and community engagement during his visit to the exhibition.
A regular visitor to the Biennale, Dr Kumar expressed admiration for its growth over the years. “It’s amazing to see how the Biennale has evolved. This edition is much larger, and the levels of art, curation, and community participation are truly exceptional,” he said.
“Along with the ocean and the natural surroundings, the venue becomes a star in itself,” he said.
Highlighting the Biennale’s distinctive venues, Dr Kumar appreciated the use of heritage spaces such as Aspinwall House and the restored spice warehouses, noting these had added depth to the viewing experience.
He also highlighted Ibrahim Mahama's installation ‘Parliament of Ghosts’ at Anand Warehouse, Mattancherry as a standout work, describing it as deeply sensorial and immersive.
“I’m proud that something of this scale and quality is happening in India,” he remarked, drawing comparisons with the Venice Biennale.
The current edition of KMB brings together works by 66 artists and collectives from across the globe, presenting diverse artistic practices while fostering meaningful engagement with local communities.
Several notable personalities were also present at the Biennale, including artist Meera Devidayal, cinematographer Madhu Neelakandan, and filmmaker P.A. Ranjith, who explored the exhibitions and interacted with the artworks.
