Kochi, Jan 10: A woodcut printmaking workshop conducted at ABC Art Room, Bastion Bungalow, led by artist Prathapan G, offered participants an interactive introduction to the craft of printmaking, highlighting the patience, skill and effort required in this art form.
Prathapan, an alumnus of RLV College, Tripunithura, where he honed his skills in painting and woodcut printing, shared his expertise with students and art enthusiasts.
The workshop was one of the initiatives by the Kochi Biennale Foundation (KBF) aimed at promoting art forms and creating a platform for artists to explore new experiences and spark creativity. It was a unique opportunity for participants to delve into the intricacies of woodcut printing.
Students, young artists and art enthusiasts took part in the workshop to learn the process of woodcut printing, which involves carving an image onto a wooden block, applying ink and transferring the print onto paper.
Under Prathapan’s guidance, participants were introduced to the basics of the art form, from preparing the wood surface to understanding how negative and positive spaces shape the final image.
Throughout the session, participants worked hands-on with tools, learning how to shape ideas into carved forms. Prathapan moved among them, offering individual feedback and demonstrating techniques, while also sharing insights from his own artistic practice.
Prathapan said the workshop sparked strong interest from people and art enthusiasts keen on exploring different techniques and styles in woodcut printing. He added that the experience was enriching, with participants experimenting with various aspects of the medium, including single-colour and multi-colour prints.
He highlighted that allowing participants to take home the plywood used in the workshop not only let them keep their creations but also encouraged them to further explore their artistic passions.
Durga S, a participant, said the workshop gave her a deeper understanding of the skill, precision, and patience involved in printmaking. “It was my first experience with woodcut printing and I had never heard of this art form before attending the session,” she added.
