Kochi / January 12, 2026

Kochi, Jan 12:  An illustration workshop, titled The Inner Works of Graphic Novel, as part of the ongoing Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB), turned out to be a master class in graphic novels, encouraging participants to translate their ideas into sketches and visual narratives while focusing on character creation and story development.

The session, led by artist and animator Joshy Benedict, was held at Pavilion, Bastion Bungalow, Fort Kochi.

Benedict spoke about his works Pannimalath (The Pig Flip -graphic novel) and A Coconut Tree (animation film), sharing personal experiences from his creative journey. “Graphic novels are bringing in positive ideas, with increasing participation from the younger generation,” he said, adding that this growing interest was reflected in the enthusiastic response to the workshop.

Participants remained actively engaged throughout the session, exchanging ideas, developing panels, and receiving direct feedback from the facilitator.

Joseph, one of the participants, shared his experience: “I wanted to hear from someone who has actually made a graphic novel. Everything he spoke about was helpful and inspirational. We created panels and received feedback—it was super awesome and valuable.” Joseph said he developed an interest in comics from a young age and even made them during his school years. “I’ve always wanted to create graphic novels, which is what brought me here. Overall, the workshop was excellent, and I would recommend everyone to attend the Biennale workshops—they’re like hidden gems offered for free,” he pointed out.

The sketching session, in particular, was described as highly engaging, helping participants sharpen their thinking, generate new ideas, and deepen their interest in art.

The session attracted many students and illustrators, reflecting strong interest in graphic storytelling.

The workshop concluded with the screening of Coconut Tree, which won the 2024 National Film Award for Best Animation Film, offering participants another perspective on visual storytelling.
