Govt sanctions Rs. 3.22 crore for upgrading infrastructure in Fort Kochi

Kochi, Nov 5: Ahead of the 6th edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB), the Kerala government has sanctioned Ras. 3.22 crore for enhancing tourism infrastructure in Fort Kochi.

Fort Kochi is already a major tourist destination and the works to be taken up as part of the project will enhance the destination’s appeal for both foreign and domestic visitors, Tourism Minister Shri P A Mohamed Riyas said.

Significantly, this project comes ahead of the upcoming edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB), which will see a lot of footfall to Kochi, the Minister added.

The works to be taken up include landscaping, street art sculpture and street furniture.

The administrative sanction for the proposal, submitted by Department of Tourism under the Emergency Action Plan, also includes site preparation, installation of inbuilt furniture, construction of pavements, buildings, roof, doors and windows.

Further, the approved proposal envisages renovation of existing structures and construction of a toilet block besides electrical infrastructure.

The proposal was first examined in detail by Departmental Working Group on Plan Schemes. Following this, the government approved the proposal on the condition that an escrow account will be opened for the purpose of maintenance of the beach.
