Trivandrum / November 1, 2025

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 01: Arunitha Mohan and Aanya Mohan, young musicians from the city, have received an invitation to perform at the coveted Playground Music Festival organised by the musical band Playfords in Weimar, Germany, from November 7 to 9.

The rare opportunity for the sisters, hailing from Kulasekharam here, to perform in one of world’s most followed early European music festivals, is facilitated by the German Cultural and Language Institute, Goethe-Zentrum here.

A professional Veena player, Arunitha is a product of Sree Swathi Thirunal Government College of Music. Aanya is a professional violinist, pianist and composer, excelling in playing both Indian classical and western music in violin.

Playground Festival of early music folk was established by the ensemble The Playfords in 2011 in order to combine historically informed performance of early music with historical improvisation and dance. The festival also serves as a venue for a wide range of musical styles such as traditional music from all over the world.

Hailing from Weimar, the hometown of German literary legend Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, The Playfords are known for their thrilling performance of German songs and dance music from the17th to 19th centuries. The band has performed with many international guest musicians in the past.

At the upcoming edition of the event, Arunitha and Aanya will be performing along with The Playfords at the festival, themed “Upon a Ground.”

The young talented musicians had presented a highly appreciated Indo-German fusion performance during their concert in Kochi on February 27. They have shown a great interest in early German and Middle European Music,

The invitation to perform at the festival also comes as a good opportunity for the young musicians to dive deep into the early European music, said Dr. Syed Ibrahim, Honorary Consul, Federal Republic of Germany and Director, Goethe-Zentrum. They will be able to take part in the workshops and sessions of the festival and get further training in early European music, Dr Ibrahim said.

Their entire local expenses, including transportation and accommodation, will be borne by The Playfords and the Playground.
