Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 18: The State Tourism Department has granted administrative sanction for Rs. 99,94,110 for the beautification of the Varkala Maidan underpass, known as the gateway to Varkala, a major travel destination in the Thiruvananthapuram district.

This initiative is part of a broader state project focused on improving the look and functionality of various underpasses and public spaces, by installing recreational facilities, and adhering to the government’s design policy.

The approval follows a memorandum submitted by Varkala MLA  V Joy to Tourism and Public Works Minister PA Mohamed Riyas.

The Public Works Department will oversee the construction of this project, which is expected to be completed within a six-month timeline.

The project, which aims to enhance the aesthetic appeal significantly, includes proper maintenance of the underpass, electrification to improve lighting, facilitating ambience and safety, and creation of artworks that reflect the state’s culture and heritage.

The Minister stated that beautifying the walls of the Varkala Maidanam underpass will help attract the attention of foreign tourists visiting this picturesque seaside getaway.
