Thrissur / September 8, 2025

Thrissur, Sept 08: In a big boost to Pulikali troupes, the State Government has sanctioned Rs. 4 lakhs for the promotion of the unique performing tradition, coinciding with the annual Pulikali performance that ramps up the Onam festive mood in the city.

As per the allocation, eight registered Pulikali troupes will get Rs 50,000 each. Over 400 artistes benefit from the allocation.

“Pulikali is one of Kerala’s most fascinating performing traditions, for which entire credit goes to Thrissur. As a unique folk performance, Pulikali also stands out for its inclusivity, drawing thousands, including tourists, to watch, cheer and enjoy the performers enacting as tigers, dancing and moving to the beat of percussions instruments,” Tourism Minister Shri P A Mohamed Riyas said.

The proposal in this regard was submitted by the Thrissur District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), through the district administration.

The proposal had sought funding for preserving and promoting Pulikali, also known as ‘Tiger Dance’, considering the increase in expenses incurred by the troupes for risk-free body painting, costumes, improving sound effects of the show with percussion instruments and security arrangements.

Pulikali has become a major tourist attraction, anticipating a 25 per cent increase in footfall, with the local economy earning Rs 2.5 crore to Rs 3 crore. The tradition also imparts a boost to the ‘Brand Kerala’ and promotes communal harmony.

Each pulikali team is estimated in incur an expense of Rs. 15 lakhs for performing.
