Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 25: A two-day workshop for art educators, practitioners, and aspiring facilitators was organised here over the weekend by Kochi Biennale Foundation’s Art by Children (ABC) initiative, as part of a series of programmes planned in the run-up to the 6th edition of Kochi Muziris Biennale starting in December.

The workshop titled ‘Kala Nila’, held at ‘Neighbour’, an art space in Kesavadasapuram, explored methods of art facilitation by situating it in local contexts, and co-creating socially relevant practices.

The workshop, led by ABC Program Lead Blaise Joseph and Program Associate Neethu KS, was attended by 20 participants, where they engaged in sharing their works and conversations.

“It was a gathering of art educators, fine art students and those who are generally interested in art and want to address their child in them. ABC program’s philosophy is based on learning through art,’ said Blaise who is in charge of ABC initiative since 2018.

“ABC will be conducting similar workshops in six more districts and try to create a community for art educators and practitioners,” he added.

“We strive to build a perspective around community art practices and spaces that are non-judgemental and non-competitive where individuals can be themselves and consider creative expression as their fundamental right,” said Blaise who conducts Art Room, a project for children as well as art enthusiasts to engage with various art practices, in selected schools as part of ABC.

“Artists are becoming more insignificant than ever before considering the socio-political conflicts, wars and fascist tendencies happening around the world; so we need to build small pockets of resistance by creating communities to reclaim our creative and expressive rights,” Blaise noted.

KBF has been conducting workshops, outreach programs and screenings across the state as a run up to this year’s Kochi Muziris Biennale (KMB).

The sixth edition of Biennale organised by KBF, will be titled ‘For the Time Being’. Curated by renowned artist Nikhil Chopra with HH Art Spaces, an artist-led organisation based out of Goa, the Biennale will run for 110 days, from December 12, 2025, through March 31, 2026.
