Govt sanctions Rs 1.02 Cr for Ramakkalmedu tourist site

Idukki, August 4: In a big boost to nature-bound tourism, Kerala government has sanctioned Rs 1,02,40,305 for scaling up amenities at Ramakkalmedu, one of the most sought out destinations in the high range Idukki district.

Reputed as Kerala’s ‘Cradle of Wind’, Ramakkalmedu offers a panoramic over view of a vast swath of verdant land, clustered with villages and small towns in Tamil Nadu across the state borders. The wind farm nearby is an added attraction of the site.

“The approval for this project comes when Kerala Tourism is witnessing a massive surge, with the footfalls clocking all-time high numbers.  Hill-tourism is one of our highly promising segments, which will receive a further boost with the sustainable development of facilities at Ramakkalmedu,” Tourism Minister Shri P A Mohamed Riyas said.

The site attracts around 10,000 visitors a day, who can arrive both by foot and vehicles.

The works to be taken up include renovation of rain shelter, canteen, electrical works, fencing, construction of toilet block, entrance gate and ticket counter, setting up hand rails, seating benches, installation of signages and waste bins, playing area with equipment, solar lighting and landscaping.

Enhancing the ambience of the destination, the existing ‘Malamuzhaki Vezhambal’ watchtower and the ‘Kuravan Kurathi’ sculpture will also be renovated.

The revenue from tourist footfalls will be shared between the DTPC and the Dept of Tourism in a 60:40 ratio.

The project, to be executed by the Department of Tourism, will be completed within eight months.
