World-class bus shelter idea unveiled at the KIF 2025

Kochi / July 25, 2025

Kochi, July 25 : The Insight Centre for Design Technology and Creative Arts has proposed a makeover for bus stops to enhance the quality of public transport and make it more sustainable and commuter-friendly. Based in Kochi, the organisation is designing the bus shelters of the future.

Insight seeks to transform bus stops in an inclusive and sustainable manner. They can be turned into spaces for change by utilising zero-waste and recycled materials, solar energy, and local craftsmanship.

The prototype development process has been initiated at the Kerala Innovation Festival (KIF 2025), organised by the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), at the Kalamassery Innovation Hub.

The BUZZTOP project was conceived by Rahul R. IRS (Retd), the Chairman of the Insight Centre for Design Technology and Creative Arts, and the former Secretary of Kochi Corporation.

During a presentation at the ongoing KIF 2025, which opened in the port city today, he said Kerala’s bus stops are not uniform and new bus stops are being designed in collaboration with experts, following successful models from cities such as Singapore and Barcelona.

“The design recognises that many bus stops in the state are ineffective for passengers,” Shri Rahul said.

“We have gathered insights from passengers, bus drivers, and residents before designing the prototype.”

He said a bus stop was planned to be constructed in a prominent location in Kerala within the next year. If this model proves successful, it could be replicated in more places with the support of local authorities.

Studies suggest that improving waiting facilities can increase public transport usage by 15-20%.

The design of the bus stop will ensure that the timing of the buses, route, visibility from the bus stop to both sides, and real-time information about the buses are displayed in clear graphics and large letters.

It features a roof that shields against the sun and rain without blocking the view, provides safety from waterlogging, includes seats with backrests and armrests, and offers charging facilities.

The construction will cater to the needs of women, older people, and individuals with disabilities. The project will be carried out with support from various agencies, utilising creativity and technical expertise.
