School students showcase solutions for live issues at GTECH skill summit

Trivandrum / March 29, 2025

Thiruvananthapuram, March 29: Innovative solutions developed by school children to address some of the live issues such as human-wildlife conflict were on display at the expo on the sidelines of the skill summit Permute 2025, organized by the Group of Technology Companies (GTECH)  at Tagore Theatre here today.

The concepts and systems that the school students developed such as advance warning of an impending landslide, developing smart farms, scientific waste management and conservation of environment were of profound social and environmental significance.

Abhishek Nair, a student of class 9 of  the Government Technical Higher Secondary School, Sreekaryam, came up with an advanced warning system that can detect early signs of an imminent landslide.

Abhishek said he started working on the idea moved by the touching scenes of the devastating landslides that hit parts of Wayanad district last year.

“A landslide happens when the structure of soil changes and the moisture content increases in the soil. My project uses a rod to be installed in landslide prone areas. This rod consists of three angle sensors and a moisture sensor which can detect any change in the structure and moisture level of soil. This information can be transmitted to disaster management agencies via satellite with help of Artificial Intelligence. Similar systems are successfully deployed in Germany and other developed countries,” says Abhishek.

Another transformative idea was showcased by Ananthu S, a class X student of Govt. Technical Higher Secondary School, Sreekaryam, who developed a prototype of automatic water cleaning system. “This idea came to me after reading the tragic news of a man’s death while attempting to clean Amayizhanjan canal in the city,” says Ananthu.

“My prototype uses a conveyor belt installed in a waterbody, which collects the waste particles. This belt can be controlled by mobile using blue tooth,” says Ananthu.

Smart Farm, a concept developed by a group of students from Venjaramoodu Government High School, seeks to address the burning issue of human-wildlife conflict. The concept uses sensors that produce ultrasonic sound which can scare away wild animals when they come in to contact with the range of sensors.

Automatic street light, automatic walking stick, smart cloth line and Child- friendly open source large language model are some of other fascinating ideas on display at the expo.

GTECH Permute 2025 was inaugurated by Chief Minister Shri Pinarayi Vijayan.

Over 2,000 delegates attended the one-day event which saw subject matter experts discuss and debate the roadmap for skilling agencies and colleges to enable them chart their activities in the fast-changing talent ecosystem.
