Contract employees disrupt milk distribution after action against theft
Kollam / October 21, 2024
Kollam, Oct. 21: Milk supply has been partially disrupted following a strike by a section of contract employees of vehicles hired by the Thiruvananthapuram Regional Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd (TRCMPU) of Milma on the Keralapuram route in Kollam district, despite the authorities of Kollam Dairy of Milma calling the unions for talks.
Milma Kollam Dairy had filed a police complaint against some contract employees belonging to CITU and BMS, deployed on vehicles for distribution of milk, after it was found they had stolen around Rs 27,000.
Due to the strike, Milma could not distribute around 75,000 litres of milk. Following this, the Kollam Dairy manager convened a re-conciliation meeting and agreed to withdraw the case as demanded by the unions if the contractor paid back the amount.
However, the unions continued the strike, demanding that employees expelled on similar charges on previous occasions, be taken back unconditionally. They continue to disrupt the milk distribution even after the management informed them in writing of its willingness to discuss the demand in the presence of Milma director board members on October 28.
