KSFDC holds script writing workshop for aspiring women, SC/ST directors

Thiruvananthapuram, June 16: A workshop on screenplay writing, led by eminent film makers and organised by Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC) as part of the state government’s path-breaking initiative to support aspiring women and Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) film-makers, has commenced here.

Renowned filmmakers Amit Tyagi, who is a former dean of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Priya Krishnaswami, and Atul Taishete are the mentors at the five-day workshop, which began on June 14 at Chitranjali Studio in the city.

The workshop has been planned as part of selection process under these projects.

In all, 27 candidates in both the categories are attending the workshop, which will conclude on June 18.

The workshop follows a course-plan of helping the participants develop their one-page outlines into a 10-page treatment.

The activities at the camp include introductory lectures by mentors to impart necessary theoretical knowledge, online mentorship sessions and one-on-one interactions. Before winding up, the candidates will get an opportunity to make a 30-minute presentation oftheir ideas before the mentors.

The mentors will shortlist the students and their stories, based onsuch criteria as originality of ideas, strength and the candidate’s ability to develop the idea further.

The Government has launched the pioneering projects “Cinema of Women Directors” and “Cinema of Directors belonging to SC/ST cateogry”, being implemented through KSFDC,to give a handholding to aspiring directors from these categories.

‘Nishidho’, the first movie produced by KSFDC under Films by Women Directors projectand directed by Tara Ramanujan, won the second best film award in the state film awards, announced last month.

The 1975-founded KSFDC is the country’s first public sector corporation for film development.
