Trivandrum / June 26, 2024

Thiruvananthapuram, June 26:Local self-government institutions have a lot more to do to sustain the first year's gains of the Malinya Muktha Nava Keralam or Garbage-Free Kerala campaign and achieve the goal of making the entire state litter-free, said Smt Sarada Muraleedharan, Additional Chief Secretary, Local Self-Governments Department.

She was addressing a meeting of the members of the district and state committees of the State Panchayat Association here on Wednesday

Listing out last year’s achievements of the campaign, Smt Muraleedharan said this campaign has presented another unique Kerala model to the world.

She said Kerala has received accolades not only from other states but even from international agencies like the World Bank.

“The role of the local self-government institutions in this achievement is great,” Smt Muraleedharan said.

“It's crucial to take up the necessary projects to optimise the waste storage capacity in the coming days and complete them in a time-bound manner.”

She said septic waste disposal systems should be given importance while undertaking such projects.

Local industrial development potential for processing scrap and recyclable materials should also be considered.

Smt KM Usha, President, State Panchayat Association, Shri KK Rajeev, Secretary, Shri K Suresh, General Secretary and Shri VV Muhammad Ali, Vice President were also present.
