Challenges in GenAI as infinite as its scope: IBM expert

Kochi / June 20, 2024

Kochi, June 20: The scope for generative artificial intelligence is as infinite as the challenges involved in formulating GenAI-based technological products, Srinivasan Muthuswami, Senior Technical Staff Member (Automation Division) of IBM India Software Labs, said today.

Credibility is the most vital issue facing GenAI as well as its developers, as even minor flaws can lead to misuse in a big way, according to the expert at his talk on GenAI organised by Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation in association with IBM.

While GenAI is making inroads into areas such as stock market, time has also come for developers to think beyond conventional lines, he said in his lecture on ‘Transforming Ideas into Innovation’ at Infopark in suburban Kakkanad.

GenAI must go for open approach to data and models for select domains, besides models that carry credibility and are cater to social empowerment, Muthuswami noted. Currently, the business community struggle to explain the GenAI-backed decisions, and face challenges in measuring artificial intelligence, he said at his hour-long talk at Thapasya auditorium.

Noting that the business community is anxious about the security, credibility and morality around GenAI, Muthuswami listed AI governance, data complexity, high price, limited expertise and absence of AI-model development tools as the hurdles for institutions to employ AI. “Today, GenAI has thrown up lot of opportunities. We can go further forward through innovations,” he said.

An interactive session towards the end saw the audience noting that the lecture would prompt professionals to take a more prudent approach in resolving GenAI-related issues. They spoke with optimism about attending the country’s first International GenAI Conclave in the city next month. Registrations can be made at https://www.ibm.com/in-en/events/gen-ai-conclave.

To be held at Grand Hyatt on July 11 and 12, the Conclave will deliberate on the impact of generative artificial intelligence, challenges, latest developments and opportunities to leverage it for the country’s economic advancement and career growth for the youth. With its agenda set to provide valuable insights and an immersive experience, the event will feature panel discussions, interactive sessions and product demos on ways to deploy GenAI with trust and confidence.

Hosting a line-up of eminent international and Indian technology experts, innovators, policymakers, industry leaders and distinguished senior academia from the AI, defence and software domains, the conclave will showcase Kerala's talent, innovation prowess and government policies that hold the potential for developing and scaling GenAI applications for businesses and society.
