Wipro wins women’s football championship at Infopark

Kochi / May 27, 2024

Kochi, May 27: The fifth edition of Corporate Champions League (CCL) football for the employees of Infopark turned a fresh chapter for female empowerment, as the women’s tournament with 12 teams saw Wipro emerging the winners by defeating UST Global.

Women have been featuring in the CCL ever since a foursome began holding the tournament from 2017, but women’s participation have been confined to matches carrying just penalty kicks. This year, the organisers — Rajesh C.R., George Nelson, Athul K.C. and Shyam Kishan — succeeded in holding full-fledged matches for them at the IT hub in Kalamassery.

The dozen participating teams were chosen from a list of 17 applicants, organisers said. The matches, near Infopark, were held on a turf ground of international standards. The teams had five players and a Queen of the Match title was announced after each encounter.

Rajesh, while pointing out that the tournament carried moments of high standard, said the pre-event publicity, too, bore professionalism. “We carried out those photo shoots at the workplaces of auto-rickshaw drivers, construction workers, sanitary workers and medical nurses,” he revealed. The referees and officials were from the Kerala Football Association.

Wipro captain Anna, while lauding the facilities at CCL, said participation mattered more than victory or defeat. “The matches proved that women can shine well in whichever field, provided the opportunity comes,” she added.

Rajesh said plan was afoot to host both men’s and women’s CCL from next year. “We are aiming for an all-India CCL in the subsequent years,” he revealed.
