Summer camp for school children gets underway
Play and fun mark 7-day ‘Kalapila’ at Arts and Crafts Village

Thiruvananthapuram, May 15: A summer camp for school students, packed with a range of exciting activities complete with play and fun, jointly organized by Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), Kerala Academy of Skills Excellence (KASE) and the Kerala Arts and Crafts Village, opened today at the Crafts Village at Vellar near Kovalam.
Around 60 children are attending the seven-day camp, styled as ‘Kalapila’, where diverse activities offering ample scope for the participants to express their talents are planned between 8 am and 10 pm on all days.
Welcoming the children to the camp, an assortment of 10 installations made of trash materials on the topic ‘Kalapila’ by artist Parag Pantheerankavu, are put up in different spots of the Crafts Village campus.
The first day saw theatre activist Vipin Das Parappanangadi leading a workshop, Deepak V conducting open mic, besides ‘Kalarippayattu’ session by Kadathanadan Kalari Troupe and folk songs by Punnad Polika Folk Music Band.
The camp offers children opportunities to try their hands on a lot of creative and cultural activities like painting, face painting, kalari, skating, music, photography, theatre, clay pot and sculpture, palm leaf craft, kite flying, animal flow, skywatching, night walk, nature observation and mathematics, along with authors’ meet and cultural programmes.
The participants are provided accommodation and food, while local conveyance for commuting has been arranged for those who chose the non-residential option.
KSUM, which was established in 2006 under the Kerala government, works for entrepreneurship development and incubation activities in the state.
