HKS members are spokespersons of waste-free Kerala: Dr Divya S Iyer

Three-day training for Haritha Karma Sena members concludes

Thiruvananthapuram, March 14:  Haritha Karma Sena (HKS) members are the on-the-ground  spokespersons of Kerala’s total waste management campaign Malinya Muktam Nava Keralam, according to Dr Divya S Iyer, Project Director, Kerala Solid Waste Management Project (KSWMP).

Dr Divya S Iyer was addressing the concluding session of the three-day training programme for HKS members of 93 Urban Local Bodies across the state, organised in association with Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA) here.

The HKS members can be truly proud of their role in waste management in the state at a time when serious research and studies are taking place the world over, on scientific and sustainable waste management. The work of HKS is seen as a sterling example even outside the state, she said.

“The grave levels of pollution now being faced by society could be drastically reduced if we just think about how earlier generation, managed things without plastics,” Dr Divya S Iyer said.

The programme was organised as part of the World Bank aided Kerala State Waste Management Project, that has set an ambitious target of putting in place scientific and sustainable solid waste management systems in all ULBs in the state.

Over 7500 HKS members from 93 ULBs across the state attended the programme in 116 batches.

Various issues covered by the programme included achieving cent per cent collection of waste, collection of user fee, exploring possibilities of enhancing revenue, proper health safeguards and safety protocols to be followed and better utilisation of available infrastructure and vehicles.

Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Secretary Shri Binu Francis, KSWMP Social Expert Shri Vaisakh M Chacko, Capacity Building expert Shri Sunil Kumar, Deputy District Coordinator Shri Athul Sundar, Clean City Manager Shri B Biju, Solid Waste Management Engineer Smt Karthika M J and KILA District Facilitator Shri Subhash Chandran were among those present at the function held at the Sathyan Smaraka Hall in the city.
