Plantation Expo: Have steaming cups of tea, coffee free and know all about them

Kochi / January 20, 2024

Kochi, Jan20 : Come to the Kerala Plantation Expo, have steaming cups of tea or coffee free. Not just that, you can update yourself on a whole lot of things about your favourite brew with which you start your day.

Malayalis have a reputation of downing umpteen cups of tea or coffee, day in and day out. But not many know from which hilly tract their favourite brands come, how they are harvested, processed and packaged before they reach your pantry.

Never miss the free tea shop set up at the very entrance of the three-day Kerala Plantation Expo at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, opened by Law, Industries and Coir Minister Shri P Rajeeve today.

Now into its second edition, the event is organised by the Plantation Directorate of the State Industries Department

Apart from welcoming you with a hot cup of tea as you step in at the stall, Praveen from Vandiperiyar has a few finer points to tell about the globally famed south Indian tea and coffee.

“All tea is good tea. The processing makes all the difference. Finally, it’s your ability to relish the nuances of the flavour that clinches,”Praveen, who has over one-and-half decades of experience in tea plantations, said.

“The same is true of coffee as well. Processes like roasting, grinding and flavouring have a lot to do with the taste and pungency. Seasoned coffee drinkers will quickly make the difference,” Praveen said.

The expo is not all about tea and coffee. The show also has on display a wide range of estate produce from spices to value-added products.

The entry to the expo is free and visitors can also have vivid glances into the  history of plantation sector in Kerala, and its social, political, economic and cultural impact.  It also showcases the latest developments in the sector including application of cutting-edge technology in the sector and smart equipment.

The show is also stacked with seeds and saplings of high-yielding plants for sale at discounted prices, while cashew saplings are given free to take home.

The expo is open for public from 9 am to 11 pm till it closes on January 21.
