Thiruvananthapuram, May 31: Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (KCMMF), known by its brand Milma, today launched a major project to produce and supply Ayurvedic Veterinary medicines for treatment of commonly found cattle diseases.

Implemented in collaboration with Ayurvedic drug manufacturer Kerala Ayurvedic Cooperative Society (KACS), it aims at reducing the input cost on dairy farmers and boost production of high-quality milk free of anti-biotic residue.

Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, Smt J Chinchurani, inaugurated the exchange of the production agreement between the Malabar Regional Co-operative Milk Producers Union (MRCMPU) and KACS at a function at Milma Bhavan, here. The Minister also handed over the production licence from the Department of Drug Control to both sides. Milma Chairman Shri KS Mani presided over the function.

Lauding the initiative, Smt Chinchurani said the project to reduce the cattle treatment cost is a significant step by Milma to help dairy farmers.

“The cost of cattle treatment is one of the biggest crises being faced by dairy farmers. Even for treatment of common diseases like mastitis, they have to shell out around Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000,” she said.

The Minister noted that another plus-side of the Ayurvedic medicines is that there is no side-effect.

The Minister handed over the licence and the production agreement to Shri Mani and Dr Sanil Kumar M.M, President, KACS.

Ernakulam Regional Co-operative Milk Producers Union (ERCMPU) Chairman Shri John Theruvath released the Ayurvedic Veterinary medicine brochure by handing it over to Trivandrum Regional Co-operative Milk Producers Union (TRCMPU) Administrative Committee Convenor, Shri N Bhasurangan. Milma Managing Director Dr Patil Suyog Subhashrao was also present.

In 2021, Milma signed an MoU with KACS to manufacture Ayurvedic Veterinary medicines and applied for licence from the Drug Control Department.  The Malabar Regional Union of Milma was given the licence for the production of eight Ayurvedic Veterinary medicines.

Smt Chinchurani will inaugurate the distribution of these medicines at a function in Palakkad on June 6.

Shri Mani said Milma’s association with KACS for this project will usher in a tremendous change in the dairy sector.

Malabar Regional Co-operative Milk Producers Union (MRCMPU) MD Dr Murali P said the project is aimed at a holistic approach to cattle health, increase productivity and produce high quality milk completely free of anti-biotic residue.

Dr Sanil Kumar, who presented the project report, said dairy farmers spend a huge amount for treatment of cattle, which could be sharply brought down by this project.

Director of KCMMF and Malabar Milma Shri Narayanan. P P welcomed the gathering. Dairy Development Department Director Shri V P Suresh Kumar; and Malabar Rural Development Foundation (MRDF) CEO Shri Georgekutty Jacob; and Shri Rijesh, Secretary, KACS, were also present.
