With tablets, Ayurveda reinvents its role in resisting lifestyle diseases

Trivandrum / December 2, 2023

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec. 2: The ongoing Global Ayurveda Festival (GAF) has reinforced the unique role of Ayurveda in dealing with lifestyle diseases by coming out with tablets, instead of concoctions, for major health issues such as those related to heart, diabetes, thyroid and ovary.

Oral pills capable of checking hypertension owing to heart ailments and cholesterol form the main attraction for visitors at the fifth GAF that began yesterday and is slated to conclude on December 5. The highly-effective herbal medicines at the expo have been developed by a range of manufacturers from small-time to leading firms.

The tablets work towards decreasing cardiac complications by controlling the presence of fat in blood vessels, thus containing high BP that typically triggers hypertension. Yet the medicines are relatively less sought in the market, point out experts at the event in the state capital. “This is because people believe that one has to go by a strict diet and other regimens for Ayurveda medicines to be effective,” points out Dr Sindhu A., who is Vice-President of the Medical Research Wing of the Coimbatore-based Ayurveda Pharmacy. “It is more so in the cases of heart diseases.”

Vaidyaratnam Group Senior Marketing Manager Sreejith Unni said recent researches have helped the manufacturers convert medicines in the form of tablets, extending their shelf life. “Today, the expiry dates are farther after production,” he reveals.

Dr Anoop Rajan of Kottakkal Ayurveda Hospital said the Ayurvedic tablets can be consumed along with allopathic medicines without compromising efficacy. At least ten leading studies from across the globe have shown the vitality of herbal ingredients in improving the results in the treatment of major diseases, he adds.

The five-day conclave, inaugurated by Vice President Shri Jadeep Dhankar, features a National Arogya Fair with diverse medicinal plants and their utilization in Ayurvedic preparations.  All major Ayush institutions have put up stalls at the expo. Also, there are pavilions by 20 Ayurveda colleges.
