Parenting critical to gender equality in business management: Huddle Global

Trivandrum / November 18, 2023

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 18: Women don’t fundamentally lag in leadership qualities but they seldom enjoy a conventional sense of entitlement as men do in society, the Huddle Global conclave noted today.

The resultant gender inequality must eventually vanish to usher in a level playing field in business management, according to a session led by three top women executives at the three-day event which concluded over the weekend.

Families should pay the same attention to children while training them on handling domestic finances, the experts said, discussing ‘Reshaping the Leadership Path for Women in Business’ at the meet organised by Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) at Adimalathura near Vizhinjam, 30 km south of the state capital.

“Teach the value of money to your sons and daughters in no different ways,” pointed out Deepali Naair, CMO, CK Birla Group, at the 45-minute session moderated by Startup Middle East founder and CEO Siby Sudhakaran. Added Kritika Murugesan, Senior Director of 10000 Startups, NASSCOM, emphasising on self-conviction: “Don’t shy away from what you are doing.” The third speaker, Kavitha Murali, Head of Strategy & Business Planning, Visa, exhorted the need to revealing one’s ignorance about a subject by standing up and saying “I don’t know”.

As much as the need for being a “keen learner”, Kavitha highlighted the need for clarity in thinking during interactions and presentations. Substantiating, Deepali said the digital era has warranted redefinition of communication skills. “It is not just your English language, speaking style or body language that values. What’s important is the content, the purpose and the vision. There can be a story around the narration.”

Kritika said business management chiefly required the ability to make decisions. “One should have not just the attitude to learn, but to do what you think is right.”

The three speakers stressed the need for “learning agility”, saying changing times merited awareness about trends and novel ways of knowing about them.

KSUM is Kerala government’s nodal agency established in 2006 for entrepreneurship development and incubation activities in the state. The fifth edition of Huddle Global had around 15,000 delegates converging from within the country and abroad. It showcased cutting-edge products from emerging sectors, besides an expo of products from 100-plus nascent companies.
