Trivandrum / October 27, 2023

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct. 27: Dr Divya S Iyer assumed the charge as Project Director of Kerala Solid Waste Management Project (KSWMP) on Thursday.

A 2014 Kerala cadre IAS officer, Dr Divya, also the Managing Director of Vizhinjam International Seaport Thiruvananthapuram, succeeds Shri Jafar Malik.

Hailing from Thiruvananthapuram, Dr Divya has served as the Pathanamthitta District Collector since 2021. She also served as Assistant Collector at Kottayam, Thiruvananthapuram Sub-Collector, Deputy Secretary of Local Self-Government Department (LSGD), and Mission Director of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).

A medical doctor, Dr Divya was widely acclaimed for making all-out efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. She also made it to the list of Kerala Insider’s 50 most influential people of 2020 for her relentless efforts to make the state government’s ‘Break-the-Chain’, a mass campaign to combat the pandemic.

KSWMP, as conceptualised by the state government, aims to provide a permanent solution to solid waste management in urban areas across Kerala, thereby making the entire state garbage-free by 2024.

With the joint intervention of the state and the urban local bodies (ULBs), KSWMP intends to make Kerala’s development journey sustainable by turning its cities cleaner, healthier, and more liveable.

Implemented in all 93 ULBs of the state, the project will further strengthen institutional and service delivery systems in ULBs for the implementation of an effective solid waste management system.
