KSUM cancels WSS 5.0 following death of staff at venue

Kochi / September 29, 2023

Kochi, Sept 29: Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) called off the fifth edition of Women Startup Summit (WSS 5.0) today following the untimely demise of a support staff at the venue, minutes before the start of the event aimed towards strengthening female entrepreneurship.

Ms Mary M.P., 49, passed away at KSUM’s premises in suburban Kalamassery, just as WSS 5.0 was set to begin at the Digital Hub. The tragedy prompted authorities to cancel the day-long conference packed with lectures, panel discussions and workshops.

“It is with profound sadness and paying respect to the departed soul, KSUM decided to cancel WSS 5.0, scheduled to take place today at Digital Hub, due to a tragic incident that occurred earlier this morning,” KSUM said in a press note. “Our deepest condolences and sympathies go out to her family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.”

“In light of this heart-wrenching event and out of respect for the grieving process, we have made the difficult decision to cancel WSS 5.0,” added the note. “We extend our gratitude to the local authorities, emergency responders, and venue staff for their immediate response and support during this unfortunate incident.”

Ticket holders will be contacted directly regarding refunds or rescheduling the event, the organisers said. “We ask for your understanding as we navigate these arrangements. We also appreciate the understanding of our event attendees and supporters as we prioritize the healing and well-being of our community.”

“Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of Mary during this incredibly challenging time. We are dedicated to providing any assistance and support to help them cope with their loss,” the note said, adding, “We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.”

WSS 5.0, which was to be held in four venues at KSUM’s Integrated Startup Complex, was to feature an expo, besides a Startup 360 giving business tips to nascent companies.

KSUM is the state government’s nodal agency established in 2006 for entrepreneurship development and incubation activities in the state.
