Thrissur, Sept 07: Dairy major Milma turned a milestone today by opening its first restaurant in 43 years of its history, as Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Minister Smt J. Chinchurani inaugurated the 1,400-square-foot vegetarian eatery in the city.

After cutting the ribbon at ‘Milma Refresh Veg’ restaurant, which will serve vegetarian food of both South and North Indian variety besides Chinese, the Minister said with a record sale of 1.57 crore litres of milk during the Onam days, Milma’s role is increasingly vital for the growth of the state’s dairy sector.

The restaurant will use Milma’s milk, curd, cheese and ghee in its dishes, while also running a juice and shake point, ice-cream parlour and supermarket at the same building in Kottapuram on the arterial MG Road. The restaurant has a 20-seat capacity

“Milma recently faced unfair competition from neighbouring Karnataka’s Nandini, but prompt interventions by our officials have stopped the trend once and for all,” Smt Chinchurani noted at the function.

The Minister, while reeling out the government’s initiatives towards efficient milk production, distribution and marketing, said a Rs 55-crore skimmed powder plant at Moorkanad in Malappuram district will be ready to be commissioned shortly. “We are proud that a recent national survey by the union government rated Milma as the top milk cooperative society when it comes to quality of milk,” she noted at the ceremony, where Shri T.N. Prathapan, MP, carried out the debut sale at the new-look Milma supermarket.

Shri Prathapan was the chief guest at the function, which was presided over by Thrissur Mayor Shri M.K. Varghese. Legislator Shri P. Balachandran also spoke. Renowned caterer Velappaya Kannan Swamy,  who purchased highest quantity of milk from ERCMPU, was felicitated.

Welcoming the gathering, Milma’s Ernakulam Regional Cooperative Milk Producers Union (ERCMPU) Chairman Shri M.T. Jayan said the dairy major planned to open half-a-dozen such restaurants across central Kerala shortly. The first among them will be at Ramavarmapuram near this city. A production unit of Milma’s bakery items is set to come up at Chalakudy , he added.

Milma, which is the brand name for the 1980-founded Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (KCMMF), is also set to permit franchisees to private individuals and other cooperatives to open restaurants, Shri Jayan revealed.

Corporation Ward Councillor Smt Saramma Robson addressed the function, while Milma ERCMPU Managing Director Shri Wilson J. Puravakattu proposed thanks.
