Waste-free drive: Onam greeting card contest for school students

Trivandrum / August 16, 2023

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 16:  Reaching out to children to spread the message of the ongoing waste-free campaign ‘Malinya Muktham Nava Keralam,’ the State Suchitwa Mission has announced an Onam greeting card contest for school students across the state.

The winners at the state and district levels will get cash prizes ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 2,000.

Students of Upper Primary and High Schools from across the state can participate in the contest by making attractive greeting cards, preferably using eco-friendly materials.

Based on the central theme ‘This Onam for future generations,’ the cards should highlight the key ideas of the waste-free campaign, aimed at making the state completely litter-free, clean and hygienic. Students of government, aided and unaided schools can take part in the contest.

After making the cards, students should submit them to school authorities on the first working day after the Onam vacation.  Schools can select the best three cards from UP and HS sections and hand over them to the District Suchitwa Mission office with proper attestation before September 9.

A committee comprising District-level Suchitwa Mission Coordinator, Joint Director of Local Self Government Department, and other senior officials will select the best three greeting cards from UP and HS categories and submit them to Suchitwa Mission State Campaign Secretariat before September 15 for the final selection.

State Suchitwa Mission and District Suchitwa Mission will give prizes to the best three cards in State-level and District-level categories respectively.

The messages in the cards must be related to ‘Malinya Muktham Nava Keralam’ campaign. Besides, schools must display the all the greeting cards made by students in schools, providing opportunities for parents and public to see them as an expo.

A cash prize of Rs 10,000 will be given to the state-level winner, followed by Rs 7,000 and Rs 5,000 to the runner-up and second runner-up respectively. The district-level prizes for the first three winners will be Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively.

Bags made by eco-friendly materials will be distributed as consolation prizes. The prizes for the state-level winners will be given away at a state-level function.

The ‘Malinya Muktham Nava Keralam’ campaign, launched by the government on March 15, 2023, seeks to make the state garbage-free by 2024.
