Waste management to be included in textbooks: Minister Sivankutty

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 15: Seeking to create proper awareness in young minds on keeping the surroundings clean and hygienic, lessons on scientific waste management will be included in textbooks from next academic year, Minister for General Education and Labour Shri V Sivankutty said here today.

The Minister was speaking after honouring the Haritha Karma Sena (HKS) members  at a function held at the SMV Government Higher Secondary School here on the 77th Independence Day.

It is important to create proper awareness about scientific and sustainable waste management in young minds as it will have an enduring impact in the society. This is why this topic is going to be included in textbooks, Shri Sivankutty said.

 Lauding the invaluable service rendered by HKS members, the Minister said HKS is not just a waste removal force but a shining model of collective action and social empowerment. The role of women in this movement is especially  important, he said.

The Minister also distributed the certificates for green technicians at the programme,  organised as part of the Malinya Muktham Nava Keralam campaign.  

Green Technicians, HKS members were provided with special training to handle technical issues that arise while rendering services of Haritha Karma Sena.

 Smt Gayathri Babu, Chairperson, Health Standing Committee, Thiruvananthapuram Corporation,  presided over the function.  Corporation Councillor Shri C Harikumar, SMV GHSS Vice Principal Ms N K Rani Vidyadhara, Dr Sindhu S (Government Boys HSS, Chala), Smt S R Bindu (NSS Programme Officer, SMV School), Suchitwa Mission District Coordinator Shri Faizi A and Shri Suresh (Coordinator, Integrated Rural Technology Centre) were present on the occasion.
