Kochi / July 24, 2023

Kochi, July 24: In a unique initiative, leading experts from law and justice besides technology will brainstorm for five days on the need to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) as a pioneering tool for ensuring increased access to safe and speedy justice across the country.

OpenNyAI Maker Residency, a transformative maker space, will be held from this Friday in partnership with TinkerSpace, Kochi, with the primary objective of addressing critical challenges in the realm of law and justice through ground-breaking AI technologies, innovation and collaboration.

The July 28-August 1 Residency, which seeks to transform the experience of justice in India, is to be held at TinkerSpace in Thrikkakara near Kalamassery, 20 km north of the city. The venue, at Punnekattumoola, will be open to the public on July 30 (from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m), facilitating presentation of innovative ideas and projects to a wider community.

The initiative will bring together entrepreneurs and innovators from diverse backgrounds, such as law, technology, design and social entrepreneurship, from India, the UK and the Netherlands to collaboratively develop visionary solutions to pressing issues in the field. The sessions, to be hosted by experts in the legal-tech field, will discuss topics such as Effectiveness of AI models, Ethics in AI, and Limitations and Challenges in Building for Public Systems.

OpenNyAI’s Jugalbandi project, in partnership with AI4Bharat and the Bhashini project of Ministry of Electronics and IT, has been cited by both Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Open AI CEO Sam Altman as one of the best use-cases of ChatGPT to disseminate information and services in Indian languages.

Some notable mentors at the Residency include JP Morgan Director (AI) Deepak Paramanand, Microsoft Research Senior Research SDE Sameer Segal, Zerodha CTO Kailash Nadh, Trilegal Partners Rahul Matthan and Nikhil Narendran, Udaan CTO Amod Malviya, Ashoka Senior Change Leader Hanae Baruchel and Project ASPIRe Director Gopal Garg.

Prominent individuals and organisations include Justice Kannan Krishnamoorthy, (former Judge of Punjab & Haryana High Court, and Madras High Court), Dhatri Reddy (Government of Andhra Pradesh) and Kishore Kommi (Andhra Pradesh Police) besides One Future Collective, Lawctopus, Insurance Samadhan, Youth Ki Awaaz and Citizen Digital Foundation.

Details of the cohort’s problem statements as well as the list of mentors and collaborators are on makerspace.opennyai.org.

One of the cornerstones of the Residency is to provide dedicated workspaces to the participants to build and prototype their concepts. The programme facilitates a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach by bridging the gap between legal experts and technologists. It will also provide an exclusive platform to participants to demonstrate their ideas and works to law students and the wider community, which will serve as a catalyst for fostering continued collaboration and innovation.
