Thiruvananthapuram, Feb. 15: The National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST), Thiruvananthapuram, a research and development institute under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, today launched its new logo and revamped website, demonstrating the new interdisciplinary face of CSIR.

Dr N Kalaiselvi, Director General, CSIR and Secretary, Department of Science and Industrial Research (DSIR), unveiled the logo and website at a function through videoconferencing.

“The support offered by the state for R&D activities carried out by NIIST will provide further impetus to the institute for developing linkages to other state-owned developmental sectors. And this will, in turn, make the common man aware of the institute’s technological initiatives,” she noted.

Dr Kalaiselvi also lauded the tenacious efforts of NIIST in securing the state's support for its novel initiatives and activities, including in coir and rubber research.

On the occasion, Dr C Anandharamakrishnan, Director, NIIST, said the institute will hold a startup conclave with focus on possibilities of incubating startups on its campus. “Kerala Startup Mission has indicated its interest in providing financial and infrastructural support for implementing new projects,” he said at the function held in the NIIST campus.

“The startup conclave will be held as part of the ‘One Week One Lab’ (OWOL) programme which will also feature a one-week long Millet Food Festival at NIIST”, he added.

NIIST is also planning to formulate and implement various innovative ideas and initiatives, he informed.

Dr P Nishy, Chief Scientist, CSIR, proposed a vote of thanks.

Launched in 1975 as a CSIR complex, the institute was named the Regional Research Laboratory in 1978. Later in 2007, it was rechristened NIIST.

Since its inception, NIIST has been spearheading quality research in the areas related to agro-processing, chemical sciences, material sciences, microbial processes, and environmental technology. It also trains post-graduate/doctoral students.

Another focus area of the institute is to achieve excellence in chemical-bioscience interface and advanced materials through high-quality research, globally competitive technologies, and value-added research and development services.

NIIST also plays a key role in connecting industry, society, and higher education to strengthen the country’s scientific capacity thereby facilitating national development and security.
