Kochi, July 8: Kerala Travel Mart Society (KTM) today welcomed the budgetary announcement to create four lakh job opportunities in the tourism sector, saying it was indicative of the government’s determined move to make tourism a priority sector.
“Tourism sector has been accorded high priority in the new government’s maiden budget. The proposal of employment creation will make tourism an engine for economic growth of the state. The budget proposes a 300 percent increase for the sector which is expected to enhance the tourism potential,” KTM President Shri Abraham George said.
“The government has lined up more than 1,000 projects, which will account for the development of new destinations as well as improvement of the existing tourist spots,” he added.
Highlighting the proposal for effective waste management in the state budget, KTM Society president said that the proposal would help to attract more tourists to the state.
The budget, presented by Finance Minister Dr Thomas Issac, also announced a concession on luxury tax for hotels. “This will make the star-rated hotels more affordable to the common man,” Shri George noted.
In particular, the infrastructure development projects proposed in the budget would give a shot in the arm to the tourism sector.
“Both tourism and infrastructure are closely interlinked. Development in infrastructure will always correspond to improvement in the tourism sector,” he said.
