Experts to discuss Coir sector sustainability and product diversification

Coir Kerala 2016 to host seminars and talks over three days

Alappuzha, Feb 01: A host of issues related to the diversification of coir and natural fibre products and the sustainability of the state’s coir industry will come for debate during a series of seminars over three days starting tomorrow (Tuesday, February 2) at Coir Kerala 2016.

Industry experts from India and abroad will come together to ideate and moot solutions on the core themes and other topics relevant to the industry, including innovative uses for natural fibre products and emerging production and marketing trends, during international and national seminars held at the EMS stadium, the venue of the sixth edition of the world’s biggest annual trade event on coir and natural fibres.

Dignitaries including Union Minister for MSME Shri Kalraj Mishra; Minister for Revenue and Coir Shri Adoor Prakash; Minister for Agriculture Shri K.P. Mohanan; Shri Surendranath Tripathi, Chairman, Coir Board; Coir secretary Smt. Rani George and director of Coir Development Shri K.N. Satheesh will address various sessions at the seminar.

 ‘Innovative Natural Fiber-based Products: Key Challenges, New Technologies and Future Prospects’ will the subject of a presentation delivered by Prof. Raul Fangueiro, of the Fibrous Materials Research Group at the School of Engineering, Portugal, during Tuesday’s morning session from 10 am - 12.30 pm.

The afternoon session, from 2.30 - 5 pm, will see architects Shri Sajan Pulimoodu and Shri Babu Cherian speak on the ‘Development of Organic Sound Paneling System using Coir Products’ and Shri Ajith Kumar, superintendent, Customs & Central Excise, Kochi, will present the third paper of the day titled ‘Custom Procedure for Coir sector’.

On Wednesday, February 3, the international seminar will again feature presentations on three papers: on (in order) ‘New trends in production, processing and technical application of natural fibre, including coir’ by Dr Ryszard Michal Kozlowski, general director, Institute of Natural Fibres, Poland; ‘Binderless Boards from coconut husks and product diversification’ by Ir. Edwin R.P. Keijsers, professor in Food and Biobased Research at Wageningen University in the Netherlands; and ‘Product Diversification and Market Channeling’ by Mr. John Nicholas Hahn of Hahn International Ltd., USA.

Presentations at the national seminar scheduled to be inaugurated by Shri Kalraj Mishra on Thursday, February 4, will look at the challenges and opportunities affected sustainability of Kerala’s Coir industry.  Three papers will be delivered: on (in order) ‘Coir Industry – Operational Issues’ by Kerala State Coir Corporation chairman Shri Rajendra Prasad; ‘Sustainability of the coir industry in Alappuzha-Chertala taluk’ by Coirfed Chief administrator Shri K.M. Raju; and ‘Small Scale Coir Sector – Issues and Opportunities’ by Shri A.K. Rajan, chairman, Kerala Coir Workers Welfare Fund Board.
