Coir Kerala: Increased facilities amid surge in visitors

Alappuzha, Feb 2: Two elegantly-built pavilions and a host of cultural programmes largely define the bustle of activities at Coir Kerala 2016 even as the ongoing international event here has set up a string of facilities for the visitors and delegates for all the five days.

The aesthetics befit the occasion. For instance, the international pavilion at the venue, EMS Stadium, is modelled as giant sailboat, thus heralding the fame of this coastal city as one rippling with a long history of maritime trade. Inside the 50,000-sq ft structure is a grand line-up of 125 stalls in several rows.

The interiors are air-conditioned, making the ambience comfortable for the delegates who are also participating at the global symposia being organised at the pavilion.

The second pavilion that features a national exhibition which also aims at massive sales is built with the beauty of traditional Kerala architecture. Its 18,000-sq ft premises have 128 stalls government, semi-governmental and private sectors.

A wide variety of natural fibres is on display at the stalls in the pavilion, where a 5,000-sq ft canteen run by Kudumbasree provides a range of food items.

There is a special pavilion of Central Coir Research Institute, which is the main organiser of the event. Its 2,000-sq ft space gives a detailed view of new-age manufacturing and processing facilities for coir besides the methods facilitating the overall development of the product. Two stalls of Coir Board are set up in the national and international pavilions.

As for the venue staging the cultural evenings every day, it is an open-air theatre that can accommodate no less than 2,000 people. It is also where the inaugural ceremony was held on Monday, and where the finale also is slated to be organised.

Huge structures made of coir add charm to the whole venue. They include musical instruments to representations of literary works like the poem Sahyante Makan and replicas of quaint old local tea shacks
