  •  Promoting Student Start-ups among the major objectives of the expo

Kochi, Jan 15: Fleshing out an initiative to encourage and support start-ups in the manufacturing and processing sector, Kerala government’s Department of Industries and Commerce has decided to include ideas and prototypes from students for the upcoming machinery exhibition, the first of its kind in the state.

The event, ‘Machinery Expo 2016’, to be held at Adlux Convention Centre, Angamali from January 28-30, will provide a platform for the engineering and B-school students of Kerala to exhibit and promote their out-of-the-box innovative ideas.

“There are a number of technological and manufacturing solutions coming out from the young brains in the state. They should be given due recognition,” said Mr. P M Francis, Director, Department of Industries and Commerce.

“We are aiming to create a strong ecosystem for fostering innovations and start-ups in the engineering sector. Our first-ever state-level machinery exhibition will help the student community to exhibit their innovations and find potential investors,” he added.

The ideas and prototypes after a primary scrutiny in the colleges will be shortlisted by the department. As many as five stalls will be allocated for the students.

A series of seminars on various finance schemes and latest technologies will also be held during the four-day event.

“We are renting out stalls for Rs 10,000 for the machinery exhibitors. But students are exempted from the stall charge,” Mr. Francis pointed out.

The event is being organised in association with Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC), Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Confederation of Indian Footwear Industries (CIFI), Kerala State Small Industries Association (KSSIA), National Small Industries Corporation Limited (NSIC), Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET), Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) and Kerala Bureau of Industrial Promotion (K-bip).

The machinery exhibition will feature exhibitors from across the country related to various industrial sectors, including food processing, garments, rubber & plastics, wood-based industries, Ayurveda and herbal, electrical & electronics, handicrafts, handloom & textiles, printing and packaging, general engineering and automobile servicing.

While there have been similar exhibitions at the district level, this is for the first time that a state-level machinery expo is being held. It will feature 125 stalls at the fully air-conditioned exhibition centre, and all the stalls will be provided uninterrupted power and other facilities. Exhibitors can register on the website:
