Pioneering Science Fest to Unveil Carbon-curbing Models

New Delhi, Dec 4: Amid a UN-initiated global summit in Paris on climate change, India is organising a five-day meet that will look into the recent pattern shift in seasons and suggest ways to cut generation of greenhouse cases and other toxic materials through new-age inventions.

The India International Science Festival (IISF), which will be formally inaugurated tomorrow, will see experts presenting models that have proved efficient in bringing down carbon emission as well as increase the efficiency of power-producing devices in ways that would not add to the energy footprint. India ranks fourth in the global list of carbon dioxide-emitting countries, according to a 2014 table released by the European Commission and Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency.

The December 4-8 conclave being organised by Union Ministries of Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, TIFAC (Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council) and Vijnana Bharati,  the largest science movement in the country, besides hosts IIT Delhi features a string of parallel sessions which will—among other subjects—deliberate on reducing greenhouse effect that has been warming the earth’s atmosphere at an alarming rate.

For instance, researchers from a Nagpur institution have devised a diesel vapouriser that will reduce the emission of mono nitrogen oxides termed NOx.  Two scholars of Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology of that Maharashtra city are presenting equipment that keeps peak combustion temperature under control.

The HMR Institute of Technology and Management in Delhi will reveal the success of a project that deals with the vital issue of refrigerant leaks from auto air-conditioning units by modifying the interiors of a car, thereby increasing its fuel mileage and engine efficiency.  This would consequently result in a decrease in tail emission and generated pollution, according to three scholars making the presentation.

From down south of the country, researchers from Coimbatore have come up with a new model-approach based on ‘green software development’ that addresses challenges of technologies riddled with waste of hardware resources which negatively impact energy consumption. Karpagam Academy of Higher Education, thus, seeks to deflect the traditional focus from providing additional features and layers of abstraction that further complicate software products to the extent of wasting energy.

Another institution from Tamil Nadu is proposing an innovative rearrangement of solar photovoltaic power plant with a new design. This will be of universal application; it is not latitude-specific and hence will have a tighter field packing that helps reduce land area requirement, according to the team from SRM University’s School of Bioengineering at Kattankulathur, just outside of Chennai.

Upcountry, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology in Uttarakhand will present a critical review on how climate change impacts water resources and propose methods to prevent dangerous levels of global warming.

Advanced Materials and Processes Research Institute in Bhopal will present a model that helps prudent utilization of seawater and sea-sand for developing advanced geopolymeric cementitious material.

Indian Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun will present its unique model that converts waste plastics into transportation fuel and petrochemicals.

Centre for Automotive Energy Materials in Chennai has come up with a method to fabricate lithium ion batteries for electric vehicles.

The papers will be presented at the three-day Young Scientists’ Conference organised as part of IISF 2015.
