Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 4: Focusing on truckers as a segment of India’s population most prone to contracting HIV virus, healthcare major HLL Lifecare Limited conducted an AIDS testing camp in the Mumbai metropolis, reaching 500 people. HLL also installed a 24x7 condom-vending machine at the truck terminal in Kalamboli near Panvel for easy access to condoms. The facility was inaugurated by MLA and leading social activist Shri Prashant Thakur.
Coinciding with World AIDS Day, the PSU which recently opened a regional office in Mumbai organised the event at Steel Authority of India Ltd’s truck terminal in Kalamboli which is the gateway to Konkan region.
The venue was chosen, considering that Kalamboli witnesses a daily passage of 1,000 trucks, of which close to 400 halt at the famed steel market. A number of studies in the country have reported extreme vulnerability of truckers to HIV transmission.
HLL through Hindustan Latex Family Planning Promotion Trust has been continuously striving to create awareness and educate the masses about the causes and prevention of HIV, AIDS and other STD's.
