To mark International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women
Thiruvananthapuram, November 24: A host of dignitaries, including popular young actress Parvathy and DGP Shri T P Senkumar will participate in a walkathon in the state capital tomorrow to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women or “Orange Day”, as stipulated by the UN General Assembly.
The UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE Campaign, managed by UN Women, to end violence against women, has marked out the 25th of each month to raise awareness and prevent violence against women and girls.
The state government’s Sudodham initiative, which was started in April to fight substance abuse, is organising the grand Orange Day campaign here. The bright and optimistic colour is expected to represent a future free from violence against women and girls, usually committed by men under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
The walkathon, which starts at Kanakakunnu at 7 am, will end at the Government Women’s College in Vazhuthacaud. This will be followed with a play by a professional group and various cultural activities by college students. Prominent women activists, political and celebrities from the art world are expected to participate in the event. Volunteers from student and women’s groups, such as the NSS, Kudumbasree and NSPC, will also participate.
