Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 8: Kerala State Chalachitra Academy (KSCA) has released a list of nine classic movies to facilitate the public to make their choice of movie to be screened at Manaveeyam Veedhi this Sunday.
The masterworks of such legendary filmmakers as Ingmar Bergman, Charlie Chaplin, Sergei Eisenstein, Federico Fellini, Werner Herzog, Akira Kurosawa and Alain Resnais figure in the list. The classics have been subtitled in Malayalam.
The list as posted on the KSCA’s official Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/iffk.ksca : 1. Battleship Potemkin by Eisenstein, 2. Wild Strawberries by Bergman, 3. Hiroshima Mon Amour by Resnais, 4. Ashes and Diamonds by Andrzej Wajda, 5. Aguirre, The Wrath of God by Herzog, 6. The Great Dictator by Chaplin, 7. Knife in the Water by Roman Polanski, 8. La Strada by Fellini, 9. Seven Samurai by Kurosawa.
The KSCA’s initiative—which is part of a wider effort to stimulate appetite for world film ahead of the 20th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK)—has proved popular with cine buffs flocking to the social network in the dozens to vote for their choice. IFFK 2015, Kerala’s premier film festival, will run from December 4 to 11.
Already, a debate on the individual merits of the works listed is taking place—both on- and offline—as news of the post is shared and spread.
Last Sunday, KSCA chairman Shri T. Rajivnath, while addressing a gathering at the first such public viewing (of Vittorio de Sica’s Bicycle Thieves), had said the screening of these classics aimed at broadening better public appreciation of timeless cinema.
