IFFK at 20: Chaplin’s Great Dictator wins Chalachitra Academy screening poll

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 10:  The Kerala State Chalachitra Academy (KSCA) in partnership with the Manaveeyam Theruvorakootam collective will screen the legendary Charles Chaplin masterpiece The Great Dictator at Manaveeyam veedhi on Sunday. The viewing, which will have Malayalam subtitles, will begin at 6.30 pm.

The 1940-made political satire received the most votes in an audience-poll held over the course of the week on the KSCA’s official Facebook page. The competition featured auteur works by such legendary directors as Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini, Werner Herzog, Akira Kurosawa and Roman Polanski, among others.

Written, directed and starring Chaplin (1889-1977), The Great Dictator was the comedy giant’s first ‘talkie’ after he had made his name in the silent movie era. In the film, Chaplin skewers both Adolf Hitler (“Adenoid Hynkel”) and Benito Mussolini (“Benzino Napaloni”)—with timely political commentary adding steel to the comedic barbs.

IFFK 2015, Kerala’s premier film festival, will run from December 4 -11.
