Biennale show: Lawyers settle on music for patients

Kochi, Sep 16: A group of lawyers streamed to Government General Hospital in Ernakulam today—neither for settlement talks nor for legal arguments, but to conduct a musical concert for the solace of the patients.

The uncommonly positive story was all owing to the popular Arts and Medicine programme being organised every week by Kochi Biennale Foundation (KBF), which had invited a unique ensemble of lawyers from ‘Raaganeethi’ music band to perform in the 82nd episode of the Wednesday show held in association with Lakeshore Hospital and Research Centre Ltd and Mehboob Memorial Orchestra.

Adv Vipin Das, a practising lawyer, began the show with a Ilayaraja hit song ‘Poove Sempoove’ from the 1988 Tamil film ‘Solla Thudikuthu Manasu’. He was accompanied by Adv Naziya Salam, who sang couple of vintage songs.

The orchestration, also by lawyers, added to the curiosity and surprise of the people assembled at the venue. Adv Roy George, who has accompanied noted singers like K J Yesudas and Shankar Mahadevan, is the keyboardist in ‘Raaganeethi’. Harish Menon, a noted percussionist leads the band. Sunil Dutt Shah and Adv Shyam Kumar were the other instrument players during the show.

Retired District and Sessions Judge K Ramachandran was the chief guest for the event. “There is often a misconception that advocates are much greedy to make money. This kind of an initiative from the lawyers can remove it,” he told the crowd. “There is genuinely a feeling of camaraderie and shared endeavour because of music.”

Singer-musician Veethraag, who was an invited guest, peppered the show with Ghazal song of Jagjit Singh. He also sang ‘Mazha’, his own composition from the 2009 Malayalam movie ‘Dr. Patient’.
