Valiathura Fisheries School to get Rs 7.8 crore for renovation

Minister inaugurates Kerala’s first coastal specialty hospital at Valiathura


Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 8: The government has sanctioned Rs 7.8 crore to comprehensively renovate the Valiathura fisheries school, said Minister for Fisheries, Ports and Excise Shri K Babu today.

The Minister was speaking after inaugurating the specialty hospital in Valiathura, the first coastal specialty hospital in Kerala built by the Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation (KSCADC).

He also added that 5.5 acres of land has been identified in Mutathara to rehabilitate the homeless people staying in the school. Shri Babu noted that the government aims at implementing a comprehensive housing project for the homeless in the coastal belt.

“We have decided to build 100 flats in Adimalathura as part of government’s housing project and open the Mutathara Net Factory soon,” said the minister.

The newly-inaugurated, specialty hospital worth Rs 1.5 crores has OP and X-ray blocks, along with a conference hall and lab. “Considering the health of women and children, we will transform the hospital into a gynecology and pediatric specialty hospital,” said Minister for Health, Family Welfare and Devaswom Shri V S Sivakumar, who presided over the function.

He also noted that two mobile medical units will operate between Veli and Poonthura soon.

The government has also sanctioned Rs 54 lakhs to implement the coastal skill development project for women, through the Society for Assistance to Fisherwomen in the coastal area.

Shri Babu inaugurated three anganwadis in Valiyathoppu, Kochuthoppu and Chithranagar with a total outlay of Rs 63 lakhs along with the high mast lights in Valiathoppu and Cheriyathura worth Rs 13.58 lakhs, as part of KSCADC’s model fishing village project.

The dignitaries who attended included KSCADC Managing Director Dr K Ampady IIS; Director Board Member Shri Veli Varghese; General Manager Smt K M Lethy; Chief Engineer Shri M Rajeev; KEL Chairman Shri Beemapali Rasheed; Councillors Smt Patricia Joseph and Shri Tony Oliver; NHRM Representative Dr Unnikrishnan; District Medical Officer, Dr Nita Vijayan and Fisheries Deputy Director Shri H Saleem; and Valiathura Hospital Superintend Shri Bipin Babu. Representatives from local bodies and regional political leaders also attended the inaugural function.
