Govt to spend Rs 46.30 crore on infra projects in Alappuzha coastal areas


Alappuzha, Sep 10: The state government has lined up projects worth Rs 46.30 crore to improve basic amenities and infrastructure facilities along the coastal areas in Alappuzha district, Hon’ble Minister for Fisheries, Ports and Excise Shri K Babu said today.

Inaugurating a modernized fish market constructed by the Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation (KSCADC) at Karuvatta, he said projects worth Rs 9.14 crore had been completed.

“The state government has included Arattupuzha and Thrikunnapuzha panchayats as ‘Matsya Gramam’. The developmental activities, carried out by KSCADC, aim to improve the amenities of the people residing in the coastal areas. Projects worth Rs 36.85 crore, including seven drinking water and five electrification projects, four libraries, fisheries station, hospital and school, are at different stages of implementation,” the minister said.

The market at Karuvatta is part of a chain of 41 hygienic fish markets being set up by the government-owned KSCADC across the state at a total cost of Rs 78 crore.

 The two-storeyed market building, which has been constructed with support from the Central and state governments, has 482.40 sq meter built-up space. Completed at an overall project outlay of Rs 1.96 crore, the facility houses 35 retail units, an office room, rest room, cold store, flake-ice unit, effluent treatment plant and toilet block. 

The minister also inaugurated the construction of a new academic block at the Government Lower Primary School, Thrikunnapuzha. The new block, worth Rs 53 lakh, will be built on a space of 180.4 sq meter and it will have three classrooms.

Hon’ble Minister for Home and Vigilance Shri Ramesh Chennithala, who presided over the event, pointed out the need for a fishing harbour at Thrikunnapuzha. The Fisheries Minister, in response to his request, said the department is carrying out the feasibility study and will take necessary steps to construct a fishing harbour at Thrikunnapuzha.

The construction work of Puthenveedu Colony – Ashraamam Road was also done as part of today’s event.
