A renovated Kanakakkunnu ready to redeem its royal status

Thiruvananthapuram, August 24: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will officially unveil the first phase of a rejuvenated Kanakakkunnu palace for the public on 25th August, a day which also marks the start of Onam celebrations in the city.

A number of new components are being installed in and around the palace to meet the demands of increasing visitors without disturbing the legacy of this heritage spot situated at the heart of Thiruvananthapuram city.

The first phase of the project which got completed in three months, includes an attractive twelve feet wide stoned stairs and a similar pathway stretching along a length of 1.25km leading to the palace, which is adorned with granite benches and a variety of flora, a reincarnation of original pathway made here before 50 years.  New lighting arrangements and sprinkler irrigation facility, also part of the initial phase, is being mounted to maintain the lush green and royal ambience of the place.

The renovation project which was initially conceived for a sum of Rs 3 crore got a shot in the arm after an additional 2 crore was allocated by the Tourism ministry. “The new fund allocation enabled us to continue the renovation program effectively and incorporate more amenities at Kanakakunnu. Almost 100 truckload of earth were deposited for leveling works at Kanakakkunnu and surroundings,” says P. I. Sheik Pareeth, Director Tourism.

Owing to additional funds received, Nishagandhi auditorium is also getting a face lift with new interlocking tiles being paved for longer endurance and two toilets are under construction exclusively for ladies. “We are also planning to increase the lighting arrangements around Nishagandhi and widen the road leading to the auditorium from 3.5 meter to 5 meter for easy flow of traffic during public functions,” says P. I. Sheik Pareeth.

Other than that a family park is also in progress behind the palace where people can enjoy a peaceful evening amidst the hustle and bustle of city life. A semi circle pathway is under construction with more seating arrangements and lighting facilities, considering the privacy of families.
